At the Tomatis Listening and Health Centre in Rolle, for the last 25 years we have been welcoming children with their parents and adults looking for a solution to their difficulties.
Our field of activity and our sense of passion are aimed at re-learning to listen, since our past experiences and emotions often distort hearing. Professor Alfred Tomatis, the founder of the method, pioneered the basic structures and mechanisms for learning that the academic world is beginning to recognize.
Everyone is welcome at our Centre with a positive new look and we are full of confidence in the capacity of each one of you to open your ears in our secure and harmonious environment.

Dr Tomatis demonstrated that by modifying hearing, a transformation in behavior and language occurs. To this end, he developed a specific device : the Electronic Ear.
1. The Tomatis Effect
The Tomatis Effect was published in 1957 and recognised by the Academy of Science in Paris. Dr Tomatis, an ear nose and throat specialist and son of a singer, soon became interested in the physiological problems that great singers encounter. Based on audiometric test results, he noticed that his patients sang badly in certain registers because they did not hear accurately. Hence Professor Tomatis formulated 3 fundamental laws:
"The voice only contains what the ear hears"
Listening frequencies restored to the ear are instantly and unconsciously returned to the voice
It is possible to change the voice permanently by auditory stimulation that is maintained for long enough.
2. Hearing and listening
Hearing, a passive process, is simply detecting the sounds that are around us.
Listening, an active process, requires awareness in order to determine the significance of what we are listening to.
3. Psychological aspects of listening
A blocked or damaged ear at different moments of its development loses the capacity for perfect hearing.
Throughout their growth, children must encounter a certain number of favourable conditions for proper development. Without these, they will use defence mechanisms that will lead to a loss of desire to communicate or fear of engaging with their family or school environment. This psychological dimension will be reflected in their listening, with the person switching off at various frequencies and listening more to themselves than to others...
4. Auditory laterality
The left ear is often used out of preference to capture sound. Now we know that the right ear-left hemisphere path transmits messages being decoded efficiently, rapidly and accurately. The left ear-right hemisphere path is more haphazard because no zone in the right hemisphere is specialised in decoding language.
The Tomatis Method has the advantage of not rehabilitating by focusing on labeling or reliving life’s negative experiences, which quite often leads to a decrease in self-esteem and loss of motivation. Rather, it acts subconsciously by having people relive their auditory and emotional experiences positively. Thus, children benefit more from Tomatis than various other methods of rehabilitation, since they rediscover more accurate auditory processing which improves listening and results in a more efficient memory, better concentration ability and the ability to enter the world of others…
The Tomatis Method therefore is aimed at re-learning to listen, restoring the ears with all the potential they had at conception/birth, and hence results in better communication and better utilization of the talents of each individual.
